Historian's lecture: "Masonic Petersburg of the 19th century: secret societies, symbols, and myths"
The history of Masonic lodges, their symbolism, and the legends that still shroud the city
How did the nobility manage their fortunes when their status forbade them to trade? Was it possible to live on a salary alone? Why was a gambling debt paid before the tailor's bill?
In this lecture we look into the everyday household economy of the Russian nobility: mortgaged estates and Petersburg tenement houses, shares in railways and sugar factories, service for the sake of rank and pension, and even how gambling became part of their financial habits.
The lecture is built on living stories from letters, diaries, and archives.
For guests staying at ACADEMIA collection hotels, attendance is free of charge.
